On Monday, August 1st, Representative Jared Polis (D-CO) introduced, for the third year in a row, a House resolution (H. For the first time a similar Senate bipartisan resolution (S.Res. 258) declared the week of September 12th as National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. The resolution was introduced September 7, 2011, by Senator Patty Murray (WA) and co-sponsored by Senators Lamar Alexander (TN), Mark Begich (AK), Benjamin L. Cardin (MD), Robert P. Casey, Jr. (PA), Michael B. Enzi (WY), Tim Johnson (SD), Barbara A. Mikulski (MD), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Debbie Stabenow (MI), Jim Webb (VA), and Sheldon Whitehouse (RI). It passed in the Senate by unanimous consent.
Thank you to the sponsors and co-sponsors, to the Senate, and to adult education and family literacy advocates for making this dedication a reality.
Supported by the National Coalition for Literacy, the purpose of this week is to raise public awareness of adult education and family literacy, assist adult learners in need of literacy services, leverage local resources, and support increased access to adult education and family literacy programs. Use this opportunity to elevate adult education and family literacy nationwide with policymakers, the media, and the community.
