Grassroots Sign-On Letter Galvanizes Advocates for Even Start
Hundreds of national and local organizations from 36 states signed on to a letter to preserve funding for Even Start. The letter was spearheaded by First Focus, the National Council of LaRaza, the National Center for Family Literacy, and the Goodling Institute for Family Literacy, with assistance from the NCL. First Focus delivered it to the House and Senate Appropriations Committee Chairmen and Ranking Members as well as the members of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittees in the House and Senate.

National Coalition for Literacy Supports Funding for Even Start
In 2009, Sherrie Claiborne, NCL President, wrote President Barack Obama expressing NCL’s concerns about adult education and family literacy, including concerns about his proposed elimination of Even Start.

National Puerto Rican Coalition Supports Funding for Even Start
The National Puerto Rican Coalition, Inc. wrote the Chair and Ranking Member of the appropriations subcommittees in the House and Senate to oppose cuts to Head Start and Even Start in the FY 2007 Labor, Health, and Human Services and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) Appropriations bill.

Resolution for Family Literacy – Mayors Conference
The U.S. Conference of Mayors recommends that federal state and local governments expand their support for family literacy programs; they urge Congress to reauthorize and designate appropriations for family literacy programs.
