Take A Stand for Adult Education
Tell Your U.S. Representative to Vote "NO" on the FY2012 Budget Resolution
Adult Education and Family Literacy Friends,
This afternoon the U.S. House of Representatives passed the final FY 2011 bill (H.R. 1473, the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, 2011) by a vote of 260 -167. 179 Republicans and 81 Democrats voted yes, while 59 Republicans and 108 Democrats voted no. The Senate passed the CR by a vote of 81-19, clearing it for the President. Now we need you to immediately turn your attention to tomorrow’s vote in the House of Representatives that sets a dangerous course now and for the future funding of programs that help low and moderate income families.
H. Con. Res 34 –the Fiscal Year 2012 budget resolution introduced by Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) would make two-thirds of the cuts from programs that help low and moderate income families with early and later education, health and nutrition. Many argue that the budget would in fact result in more joblessness, and according to the Economic Policy Institute, the proposed budget would result in roughly 900,000 jobs lost in 2012 and roughly 1.3 million jobs lost in 2013. As you know, a disproportionate number of the unemployed are in desperate need of upgrading their skills and basic education. While it is important for Congress to work to reduce the deficit, social and community programs which serve the unemployed and their families continue to be targeted.
It is critical that you, your colleagues and others in your networks call your Representatives on Friday to vote NO on the Fiscal Year 2012 budget resolution.
